Julia Bodnar

On October 25, 2000 I was honored with an interview in Cernivtsi for State Television. The program was held to celebrate my interest in exchanging Ukranian and American literary work through this new website. In the course of the program writers and poets came forward to read their work (which was translated for me as they read by my friend Lesya Budna). One of the writers who then presented me with a volume of her work was a nine-year old girl named Julia Bodnar.

Her confident demeanor, her serious affect about the proceedings, the impeccable way she projected her poetry to the group was so impressive I have made her my First Feature Young Writer.

When

Your mother's love won't fail.
Your father's love won't end.
They give their love to you
through the coldest winter snow.
When you are feeling sad
and when you need support
Their love is a helping hand
and a boat to sail.

Cranes

They are flying over the clouds,
flying over seas,
flying south.
Their call is a sad goodbye.
They bid farewell to me until the springtime.

Sympathy

Granny told the snow
that she had many ways to go
through joys, delight and happiness,
troubles, grief and sadness.
The snow was glad to listen.
It was the only one to hear
and the only one to sympathize.
It melted crying with sorrow.

Notebook

My mother bought it the other day
And I liked it so much right away.
I take it with me everywhere I go,
To school, to my friends', or just for a stroll.
It keeps all my pictures and drawings,
It saves all my stories and poems.

Zoo

The zoo is very strange this morn!
The elephant has grown a horn,
And the giraffe has gone to the market,
Because he needed to buy a bucket.

The parrot is studying very hard,
The hippo is reading - he is smart.
The seal is getting a sun tan,
The dolphin's eating like a man.

The lion is playing the drum and singing,
The monkey's taking a bath and swinging,
The snake's amusing kids around,
The mole is digging in the ground.

They all are looking for the goal
In their life. What's their role?
